JACOBI 1880 x UKIYO-E PROJECT

Germany🇩🇪 x Japan🇯🇵 craftsmanship collaboration

Jacobi 1880 and UKIYO-E PROJECT have produced one of a kind ukiyo-e, which is going to be the new bottle label for Jacobi 1880’s brandy. This collaboration was born from the resonance of ukiyo-e craftsmanship with Jacobi’s commitment to brandy making. The artwork also features the vineyards of Germany, where the brandy originates, as well as the Kleinheppacher Kopf.

The craftsmanship of ukiyo-e artisans and their passion and dedication to the art of Jacobi’s brandy-making share common ground. The label illustrates German vineyards in a Japanese aesthetic style.

The artwork, inspired by Hokusai’s works, utilizes the printing technique known as “ten-bokashi,” mainly used for depicting skies. This technique creates a gradient of moss green, effectively portraying the dreamy landscape of morning mist.

COEDO x UKIYO-E PROJECT

Notice of resale of “Vestiges of Edo at Bell Tower”

Beer full of originality made by ukiyo-e craftsmen and beer craftsmen will be reshipped this fall.
“Vestiges of Edo at Bell Tower” conveys the atmosphere of Edo to COEDO's hometown of Kawagoe City in Saitama Prefecture. The symbol of Kawagoe, which has been recognized by the Ministry of the Environment as “‘One of Japan's 100 best soundscapes’ to preserve”, was created into modern ukiyo-e by three craftsmen: an illustrator, a woodcarver, and a printer. The beer is a popular style IPA (Japanese style IPA) brewed using koji, which is the cornerstone of Japanese fermentation culture and is also the national fungus, and yuzu, a traditional Japanese citrus fruit. Please enjoy the collaborative work of three ukiyo-e artisans and beer craftsmen.

With Kawagoe's symbol “The Bell Tower” as its motif, this ukiyo-e print depicts two times of day, “Noon” and “Evening”, created and completed by an illustrator, a woodcarver, and a printer, inspired by the initiatives and concepts of UKIYO-E PROJECT, COEDO brewer wrote down the recipe, and the "Japanese Style IPA" full of originality was born.

It comes in a 350ml can, and the label design incorporates the two ukiyo-e prints, “Noon” and “Evening” into one label.

=================================================================

“EDO TO MIYAKO” Exhibition

During the Edo period, due to the prosperity of the shipping wholesalers, Edo and other regions have already been actively interacting with each other. The crossing of cultures have been quite close, thus, exchanges between Edo and Kyoto/ Osaka have flourished. From the 19th century to the 20th century, Japonism became popular mainly in France, and Ukiyo-e was at the center of it. Expressive style of Ukiyo-e among Impressionists (Contour lines, coloring, perspective, etc.) looked fresh to their eyes. The charm of Ukiyo-e spread widely "From Edo to Kamigata", "From Japan to France", and then "From Japan to the world".

This time, “Edo to Miyako”, our first exhibition in Kyoto at Ace Hotel Kyoto, will exhibit 7 works including our debut artworks, the KISS ukiyo-e series. To have a better understanding on how Ukiyo-e is made, we will showcase the production process by exhibiting “woodblocks” and “sequence prints” as well. Regardless of an era, whenever East and West meet, something new is born. Please enjoy the mix of various aesthetics from East, West, music, art, classics, and contemporary.

Current Exhibition: "Ukiyo-e Theater from Paris"

Exhibition Ukiyo-e Theater from Paris at Kadokawa Culture Museum is currently being held.

The word “ukiyo” in ukiyo-e means “the present”, which was why ukiyo-e acted as a mirror of its time and continued to depict popular trends and culture. Today, it is often paralleled to social media such as Instagram, for its role as an image-based communication tool.

The exhibition’s main feature is a large-scale projection mapping by Danny Rose Studio, inspired by over 500 historical ukiyo-e, followed by a gallery exhibiting contemporary ukiyo-e made by today’s artists and artisans. The exhibition is filled with immersive, highly “Instagrammable” contents.

Our works will be exhibited in the gallery following the projection mapping. It will be a long-term exhibition until April 10th next year, so don't miss this opportunity.

We are looking forward to your visit.
