Woodcarver: Sekioka Senrei III
Printer: Ito Tatsuya
Year: 2022
Size: Oban (39.4 x 26.5 cm)
Paper: Echizen Kisuki Bousho
Before whenever we have live print demo, we would borrow artisan’s woodblock of Hokusai’s “The Great Wave”, but since we had many requests of wanting to purchase these prints, we have decided to produce UKIYO-E PROJECT’s te-han (Publisher’s original woodblock).
Out of many reproductions out there, we didn’t want to reproduce from a reproduction because we wanted to reproduce directly from the “authentic woodblock print”, so we made a reproduction based on “The Great Wave” print close to the first edition in good condition owned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) (Directed by Shigeru Shindo, UKIYO-E PROJECT advisor).
“The Great Wave” consists of 1 main woodblock and 2 colored blocks (both sides) with total of 3 blocks. 5 sides of woodblocks are used to print and complete 1 artwork.
Back then, the han-moto (publisher) have been particular about limiting the number of blocks (to cut cost) but also creating a great piece, and it is amazing how Hokusai was able to fascinate the world even today with his composition only using 3 woodblocks.
Hokusai’s “The Great Wave” has a timeless appeal where he gets rid of unnecessary elements, and stays minimalistic yet powerful.
*Attention
- Each piece is created by hand, therefore, they may all have subtle differences in size and colour between them. For this reason, at UKIYO-E PROJECT every print is considered unique, aligned with the Edo period philosophy that each ukiyo-e is an “original” piece of work.
- They will be packaged and sent in a specially designed, paper folio.
- The artwork is sold unframed.
