We’re pleased to share that our Ukiyo-e printing workshop at Kanagawa University was a great success!
This time, participants had the opportunity to print two designs: The Great Wave off Kanagawa and Ono no Komachi. As the workshop took place in Yokohama, where the scene depicted in The Great Wave off Kanagawa is believed to be set, it was especially meaningful to print the work there.
The event also included a talk by Ukiyo-e advisor Professor Shigeru Shindō, who explained where Hokusai is thought to have viewed the scene from, as well as the meaning behind the Japanese title, Kanagawa-oki Nami Ura. The students listened with great interest and were equally enthusiastic when it was time to try printing for themselves.
As participants tried the printing process, we heard comments such as, “It’s more difficult than it looks!” Everyone worked with great focus and completed their prints beautifully. One student even told us, “I’m going to put it up at home,” which made us very happy to see how much they had enjoyed the experience.
We also displayed several works by UKIYO-E PROJECT at the venue, and it was wonderful to see the students looking at them with such interest.
It was a truly enjoyable and rewarding experience for us as well. We hope the workshop gave everyone the opportunity to enjoy the printing process, feel closer to Ukiyo-e, and discover more of its unique appeal.
