Vestiges of Edo at Bell Tower (2021)
We are excited to announce we will be releasing Vestiges of Edo at Bell Tower, the second of our Vestiges of Edo landscape series this summer!
This new piece features Toki no Kane, the historical Bell Tower that stands in the center of Kawagoe City, in Saitama Prefecture. The landmark is designated as a tangible cultural property by Kawagoe City.
Both versions will be produced in limited editions: a purely aizuri version (left), printed solely in different shades of blue to give off a fresh and summery vibe, and another with a subtle touch of pink (right), for a dreamy, evening look.
We are currently in the woodcarving stage - we will be sharing photos and videos on our special web page dedicated to this new work as well as on our Instagram, so make sure to follow our social media accounts too!
"EXPRESSION AND APPRECIATION" ART TEXTBOOK
We have some wonderful news today. Kabuki, our first collaboration ukiyo-e with KISS, will be featured in Expression and Appreciation, an art textbook that will be used by middle schools nationwide.
The ukiyo-e is included in the “Prints” section, and the textbook itself will be used for a total of 4 years, starting April 1, 2021 through March 31, 2025.
We are honored to be part of a national education program, and it would mean the world to us if our works can help inspire future generations in the slightest way.
"NEW JAPANESE AESTHETICS: MANGA CREATION" EXHIBITION
Our ukiyo-e illustrated by Masumi Ishikawa will be on show at the exhibition New Japanese Aesthetics: Manga Creation, hosted by Hankyu Umeda Department Store.
The seven prints featuring KISS, Iron Maiden, and David Bowie will be exhibited alongside works by legendary manga artists such as Tezuka Osamu (author of Astro Boy), and Koyama Chuya (author of Space Brothers). As ukiyo-e are considered to be the origin of the manga we know today, we are thrilled for our contemporary ukiyo-e to be exhibited together with the works of such iconic artists.
Please drop by if you are in the area.
Exhibition period: March 24 - April 5
Time: 10:00 - 20:00 (closes at 18:00 on the final day)
Place: Hankyu Umeda Department Store, 9F Art Stage (Osaka, Japan)

VESTIGES OF EDO IN TSUKUDA
We are very excited to finally be able to announce the launch of a new landscape series, the first work featuring Tsukuda, a neighborhood in the east of Tokyo known for its contrasting architecture of the old and the modern. The title Tsukuda ni Nokoru Edo no Omokage translates to “the vestiges of Edo in Tsukuda” - the word omokage (vestige) refers to the reflection on the river’s surface, that has continued to exist to this day, despite the fact that other things may have evolved or disappeared over time.
When we trace back the history of ukiyo-e, we can see that there have been many foreign ukiyo-e artists such as Paul Jacoulet, Elizabeth Keith, and Noël Nouet who created important shin-hanga works. We decided to follow this path in history and welcome Polish artist Mateusz Urbanowicz as the illustrator for this new Tsukuda landscape.
We will be taking pre-orders until August 16; we will be offering a special discount of 15%, only applicable during these three weeks so don't miss your chance. Please click here for more details.
